KymiSec ry
KymiSec ry, or the Kymenlaakso Cybersecurity Association, is an organization whose purpose is to share information and promote information and cybersecurity, as well as adherence to best practices. Assignment was to create a logo and graphic identity for the association, upon which the association would build its identity. Based on the graphic identity, a roll-up and publishing templates for social media platforms (Instagram and LinkedIn) were created for KymiSec ry. In addition, I provide guidance and training on the use of publishing templates and the utilization of other elements of the graphic identity. The schedule for the project is flexible, and the project is still ongoing.
Logo
In designing the logo, the intention was to create a symbol that would represent the association's activities while also reflecting regional identity. As the association operates in the Kymenlaakso region, the logo was intended to incorporate elements that unite the entire Kymenlaakso area. Researching the history and regional identity of Kymenlaakso led to the idea of utilizing the region's mascot, the otter. The otter is a versatile element for a logo, since it can be quickly transformed into a mascot for the association and stories can be built around it. In addition to the otter, elements representing cybersecurity were desired in the logo, ensuring immediate understanding of the association's focus area. For these elements, I chose a shield and a keyhole. Shields and keyholes are often associated with information and cybersecurity, making them clear choices to improve the logo's recognizability. In the final logo, the otter "guards" the keyhole embedded in the shield. This symbolizes the association's mission to spread awareness about information and cybersecurity, with the otter (representing KymiSec) protecting/shielding the keyhole (representing uninformed users). Color and patterning were added to the shield, along with a subtle easter egg of 0s and 1s. The shield conceals the text "KymiSec" in binary code.
Colours and fonts
For KymiSec ry, two shades of green, two shades of black, and white were defined as the organization's colors. The logo uses the Haettenschweiler font, while the publishing templates utilize Montserrat and Michroma.
Working on the project
After the logo design, the association wanted a roll-up for themselves, which they could use at various events to promote their association and activities. The roll-up features the association's logo, social media accounts, and a QR code for joining the association. Publishing templates were created for the association for regular posts on Instagram as well as for the Instagram Stories section by using Canva. For these templates, I designed specific graphic elements for the association, which are repeated throughout the publishing templates. The graphic elements heavily reminds futuristic sci-fi elements. The templates also uses the binary number sequence found in the logo as background images.
Overview on the project
The project for Kymisec ry is currently ongoing. More design work will be done in the future based on the communication made with the client.
