Leadership Day by IGDA Finland is an international event about how we build companies, teams and working cultures to build better games. The inaugural conference was held in 2019 and with the support of the community, it has evolved into an annual forum for leadership in games. I have been an IGDA volunteer since 2021 and participated for the first time in 2024 in the organisation of the Leadership Day. I work under IGDA digihub and our hublead asked for volunteers to organise the event. Another digihub member and I designed the graphic look together and I did all the graphics using InkScape and Canva. We started working on the Leadership day already in April and the event itself was held on 30.9.2024.
A lot of graphic material had to be produced, from the illustrations on the event's website to the prints of the event:
I joined the project in April. The project was worked on with other IGDA volunteers, some of whom had already organised a Leadership Day before. Before the summer, we held bi-weekly Google Meet meetings to go over what had been completed and what was on the to-do list for next. We also used Slack for communication and status updates. After the summer and the summer break, we moved on to weekly meetings where we went over the status of the event and future tasks that still needed to be done.
I worked on the graphics for the event mainly by myself, working on the graphics in Canva and exporting the finished work to Google Drive for others to use. A lot of changes had to be made to the graphics from time to time, for example as the event speakers changed and new issues emerged over the summer and autumn. As changes occurred, I adjusted the materials to match the situation and replaced them with old materials, keeping all materials up to date with the latest information. Some things needed a quick response, especially if your changes took a long time to complete. That's why I made my own work very precise and accessible, so that I could even make changes on the phone. My own speed made the work of the other volunteers easier, as they did not have to wait long for new materials and could get on with their own tasks.
Working on the project was really hard work but fun. I really enjoyed making the materials for the event and especially the great team we had. I got to work with talented and knowledgeable people and contribute to creating a great event. So thank you very much also to the other volunteers for their cooperation. I definitely want to be involved in next year's event, both in terms of graphics and possibly other tasks, and expand my own skills.
