I participated in gamejam called MehuJam #6
We ended up making a little game about cats pulling a sled giving out christmas gifts. Each gift has to be chosen based on a short description given by the house. The theme of the jam was sled/free.
We pretty much skipped the GDD making process this time since the only idea we came up with was quite simple and straight forward. The theme was a bit more diffucult to interpret this time since it doesn't really leave space for wondering outside the box. Yet in the end we made a working product now known as Santa Paws.
My job in this project was making all the assets, animations and shaders. During the first day we decided that this was gonna be a top-down game so I looked up inspiration because we really were lacking some. In the end the artstyle ended up being heavily inspired by a game called "Might of Merchants." After the inspiration process I started to design the cat sled using the chosen artstyle as a reference. As usual, when I finally got a clean version of the design, I made the animation using my beloved ClipStudioPaint Pro. This time I only had to make one animation which was idle/jogging for the cats. (We wanted some little movement as this was a top-down game and nothing too crazy). The animation process was the same I usually use, because it suits most artstyles well. I first made the design and then divided it to pieces which I then moved when needed when doing the frame by frame animation (this animation took 5 frames). Before finishing day 1, I also started some main assets for the scene.
During the second day I finished all the assets needed and made a quick wind shader. The shader works but I've could've made it even better since now the x-coordinate range is too big and the trees sway too much. All the layers of the trees should also move to different directions but they didn't so we ended up just making 3 diffrent materials of it and changing the wind speed values in each to fake some different movement. The rest of the day I used designing and drawing our UI elements (happiness meter and gift window), and looked up some royalty free music and sound effects for us to use.
During the third day I made a tilemap of a forest for the borders to show clearly that the players shouldn't leave, which they also can't do. I also made a pointer that somewhat looks like a star to show the direction to the next house. The start screen also needed a logo for a more cheerful look, which I made, and of course our itch.io page needed a thumbnail for more finished look.
