Highlights
- The song: Stockholm Syndrome (composed by me), includes multiple swaps between traditionally recorded and digitally created parts.
I created these parts using Reaper's MIDI-capabilities and fused them together with the recorded instruments of the band.
- The soundscape at the beginning of the song: Sound The Alarm (partly composed by me), was created with a mixture of sound effects available online, and ones recorded live. The voice acting was also done by me.
- The sample at the end of the song: Nightcrawlers (partly composed by me), was made using the static sound made from touching a guitar cable with your finger, that was then run through multiple distortion and reverb type effects. This resulted in a siren-like wailing sound that was then automated to change in pitch and volume.
Challenges
The greatest challenges in the making of this EP came up when combining digitally created elements, with those that were analog. The most common issue was having overlapping frequencies between synthesizers and either guitars or cymbals. This I solved with shaping the frequencies of these elements to make room for each other resulting in a generally clearer sound.
Conclusion
Making this EP had been my largest musical project at the time. Throughout it's creation, I had to learn new techniques for recording, mixing and mastering and solve problems that I hadn't encountered before. In the end I believe I could've done a better job, yet I also believe it was executed well enough to function as the Band's first record.
